recording package

would a package deal, like the one here at muscians friend be adequate for a modest but serious recording studio? (emphasis on modest). just what level of quality could i put out with this sort of thing?

For 3K you can get a really nice DAW setup with some nice pres and mics. As you grow you will get rid of everything in that setup. With what I have below you will keep 99% of it until to die or get out of recording.

Get something like a Motu 824, KRK RP6 monitors, 2 Joemeek 3Q pres, a Grace 101 pre, RNP compresor, Rode NTK mic, 2 SM58s, 2 Sm57s, MXL 603s and your still at the or under the 3K mark and have a great setup.
 
awesome! thanks so much. my aspiration is to put out albums that will sound good enough to be on a label, while at the same time being on a very limited budget. would your setup pull that off?

Sure, his setup would pull it off. But the talent really lies in the engineer -- not the gear. YOU have to know about mic placements, tracking, mixing, and all that good stuff. And, yeah, you need to have good gear for it all to be captured well, but it really starts with the engineer [her/]himself.
You could always start with a 4-track tape or digital recorder, a couple 57's, a DMP3 preamp, and MXL603's or Oktava MK-012's if you really want to go bare minimum. Then upgrade your pres, mics, and recorder once you learn the ropes.
Just my $0.02 (we really a 2cent icon on this board...) :D

If he has 3k to spend he needs to buy equipment that he will keep and grow with. With the equipment that I list above he will have a nice setup and get very good results. Yes he has to learn the art of recording but good equipment helps. I would also add a UAD-1 card to that setup too.

Well it want be a Sony or RCA production, but you can get some very professional results. If you use it right you will get something that you and your band can sell at gigs and over the web and not be assamed of. It will also make some very nice demos. For a home studio setup that would be very professional. You can always out some higher end pres and stuff as you grow and budget allows. But about everything I list you will keep no matter how big you grow.
 
George Massenburg will get better results with a PortaStudio, than a monkey with a Neve!!!
 
That actually doesn't look like a bad deal but if it was me I would probably go with a alesis hard disk 24 track recorder for 1500 and then get a mackie board or even a higher end behringer board, sm57/58 cables etc...for the money.
