I have a basic question really. I have a 10 input 10 output soundcard, a mixer with 8 direct outputs, and an amplifier with my stereo. How do I set this up for multitracking the best way?
Assuming your soundcard doesn't have preamps, plug your mics into your mixer. Take your 8 direct outputs from your mixer into 8 of your souncard inputs. Arm those tracks to record in your recording software. Check the levels. Adjust the preamps on the mixer so your peak levels are between -3 and -6 dB on your meters. Assign your master fader output to two channels of soundcard outputs. Feed these to your stereo inputs for monitoring.
assign my master fader output of what? can you explain in more detail what you mean by this? And can you explain about monitoring, is this what i listen to when I overdub? Sorry thanks for all the help so far.
I'm not sure what DAW software you're using. I use Protools LE, but I'd guess they're all similar. The master fader I'm referring to is basically the summing bus in your software--where all the tracks get combined together and spit out the outputs of your soundcard. And yes, monitoring is what allows you to listen to what you're recording and/or previously recorded.
