I've programmed a couple of drum tracks for 2 songs I am looking to record using CEP. My drum machine is an Alesis SR16.

Rather than simply recording the current drum backings to CEP, then multitracking with guitars, vocals etc over the top in the knowledge that the drums can't be changed without redoing everything, I'd like to be able to have the flexibility to finetune the drumming after everything else is recorded - just adding or changing a fill here and there. I know I can't do this unless I have some way of getting the timing exactly right: ie, beginning the altered drum program to synchronise exactly with the one I record initially.

Just wondering if anyone could advise me how to go about recording a MIDI track on CEP from my drum machine that will allow me to synchronise changed drum programs after instruments and vocals are recorded. I know this is what MIDI is all about, but I don't understand how to utilise it for the purposes explained above. Have read and re-read the Alesis SR16 manual, but still non-comprendez. Would appreciate any help from better informed folk who can explain in simple non-technical terms.

Cheers

Ross

cool edit is mainly for audio recording.
you cant do the sort of fine tuning/editing of a midi track you need after recording in cool.
unless there is a new recent version i dont know about of cool.
in summary cool is v good for audio. but not midi.
i use powertracks from pgmusic.com. every midi feature youll ever need.
iincluding a very high option for midi pulses per quarter note for very fine timing of midi music which is what you need for accurate midi work. check out the midi tutorials at the site and faq's.
a lot of midi pro's hang out on the forums also you can learn a lot from. peace.
ps...also from an engineering standpoint you can record one up to 48 midi tracks then convert to wave audio and import to cool edit and add the rest of your tracks if you wish. you basically set the midi track channel to channel 10 on both the track and your sr. and record away as much as you want from the sr 16.
