O.K. .... I want to drive my pre to get the sound that comes from it slightly overdriven.
I do not have a mixer I go straight from my pre (Speck 5.0) to the ins on my card (EMU 1212M

However then the levels of course are way to high in my sofware. (Reaper)

is the only way I can set levels with my pre?

You're driving a basically "real" (for lack of a better term) preamp with actual, usable headroom into a converter that, well, has no headroom to speak of at the input.

Record it clean and [SELF-CENSORED] it up later.

Gotcha! Thanks.
One other question. Doesn't really matter, but I recently changed sound cards from a M-audio Delta 44 to an EMU 1212m.
And It seems that when recording with the Delta my preamp meter would be right in the Green zone when my record levels were coming in around 18 or so.
Now with the 1212m my pre does not hardly register on its meter to get the same levels.
Am I just Imagineing the difference?

Either the meters or the converters are just calibrated differently. I would hope the 1212 is lower (probably -18dBFS -- Nice, but not low enough IMO) and the Delta's probably higher (-15dBFS perhaps? Way too high for my taste). I would imagine that neither are able to be calibrated lower (but I could be wrong).

Well with the Delta when my pre meters were just once in a while touching the yellow...I would come in at 18 or a little above.

To reach 18 with the 1212m the signal barley registers on my Pre meter.
