Recording levels what is the proper way?

The fact is, he wasn't looking for the "cause", he was looking for the "solution".

Which is what most of us do when we have a problem . . . we look for a solution. But finding a solution can be problematic unless you know the cause.

Any self-respecting doctor will endeavour to find the cause of a pain before prescribing a treatment.

To bring this thread back to the OP and try and move things forward...

Guitardude, the ST55 mic has a switchable -10dB pad on it. Make sure that is switched off. Having it accidentally switched on could be causing you to have to crank your pre too high, introducing extra unwanted noise.
