I recently purchased a Shure SM-58 microphone, and have been finding that when I plug it into the line in, I am getting a very low level of recording (volume-wise...).

I have checked to make sure the sound card levels are all the way up on the mixing panel, and that the connection is secure. But I find myself having to almost swallow the microphone to get the vocals at an okay level.

Is this normal? A soundcard thing?

Also, when recording a new track, the playback level is much louder than the recording level, so I have to take one side of my headphones off to hear myself. Any suggestions?

Mics need to be plugged into microphone preamps, not line level ins. Plugging in a mic into a line level in results in very low output to the recording software.

What kind of hardware (sound card, mixer, computer) are you using?

Mic > soundcard = no no

Mic > preamp > soundcard = way to go

Consider going to amazon.com and type in "Home Recording" in the search bar and get a recording primer....
