Hi, I won a $600 Best Buy gift card here at work. And I badly need a laptop. I've decided to continue doing any Photoshop work I do on my dying, crappy desktop...but I'd pretty much like to be able to do everything else on my new laptop, including basic recording, which I was never able to do sucessfully on my old Compaq.

I'm a little out of the loop since I gave up on home recording a few years ago, but looking at Laptops on BB's site, I see none of them in my price range offer firewire connections. I'm willing to put some extra cash on top of my 600 if need be.
Has USB 2.0 caught up enough?...at least for my needs, which are just guitar or two tracks probably 95% of the time. Up to maybe 6 tracks on rare occasions?

Next I'd like to get into interfaces and software for the above needs.

Thanks!!!

USB 2.0 is able to record at least 16 simultaneous tracks that I know of - I think it may go as high as 24...

You do not need firewire. Just get a good multicore machine with a lot of RAM (4 or more Gigs)
I would get a 64 bit processor - dual-core - toshiba makes some good ones.

Ignore the sound card as you will be using an interface that bypasses the sound card - see

Awesome! That pretty much answers everything (for now) perfectly!!! THANKS!!!!!!!!
