That SMART guy.
I will be recording a demo next weekend, with my VS1880. The recordings will be made in one room, with stereo guitars, bass and drums... So I have 5 tracks left for the complete kit.

I want the snare and kick on seperate channels. Which leaves 3... What do I do next?
I will be making a submix for the toms. (2 toms and floortom) Make it a stereo mix? And a mono overhead? Or make a mono mix and a stereo overhead? Or mono overhead and HH seperate?

I will borrow a mic kit for the drums (from a PA I'm used to work with), I'll have plenty of SM57 & SM58, one small diaphragm (don't know the exact type, we mostly use it for HH when mixing life), and my own AKG C3000 (which would be nice for a mono overhead.)

All tips are welcome. I never tracked a kit. I might be able to get some compressors too. Could be usefull when tracking a kit on a digital workstation. Right?

Personally, I'd put the kick in one, snare in two and make a stereo sub mix of the toms in three and four and the mono overhead in five. Maybe a little compression on the kick and snare.

is there any way that you can get a hold of another condenser to match with either your small diaphragm or the AKG??

If so then I would mic bass, snare, mono tom submix (or high hat?), and stereo overheads. The overheads should pick up the toms pretty well (if you mic hihats) - and I think a stereo pair of overheads are important to getting a nice, stereo drum sound. They will also fill out the drum sound and make it 'complete' - give it some depth, you know?. A mono overhead just doesn't do it for me.

a bit of compression on the kick will fatten it up real nice as well

I'd go with, Kick in 1 - Snare (with hi-hat if needed) in 2 - Stereo toms in 3 & 4 - Overhead in 5
