is it possible to record on a 4 track and then transfer each track individually into a logic file for mixing. I may be getting a 4 track that belonged to my dad but i don't have any gear for mixing on it. Is this possible? sorry if this is a complete noob question.

Yes, this is possible. The best way to do it would be to print the direct track outs from the 4-track into your DAW interface and software (assuming you have a 4+ channel interface, that is...otherwise if you only have a 2-channel interface, you'll have to print in two tracks at a time and line the tracks up manually in your DAW to get the timing right).

It's actually fairly common for music to be tracked to analog tape then print the tracks into a DAW for editing/processing/and/or mixing these days, it's a kind of compromise between the "analog tape sound" and the "convenience" or "flexibility" of digital production.

Cool, part of the reason i want to use the 4 track is my band's digital interface is only two channels. I actually have a pair of 4 tracks so i could record everything at once and play it back manually.

Decent four channel cards can be had for under $200. E.g. the M-Audio Delta 44 is something like $125 or so. Also, I posted in a nother thread here a link to a DIY mod to a cheap sound card(s) that as long as you have time, a soldering iron and some coax, the **exact** model of sound card(s) you can daisy chain the clocks and sync them up, limited by pci slots and your software.
