Okay, my band is interested in recording some of our songs and posting them on the internet for now. I have been searching around for stuff, then I finally realized I don't really know much about this. I was wondering what I need exactly. My band has a bassist, a drummer, and a guitarist. Our drummer is singing, and we might have some background volcals. Our drummer will need a mic head set, I can get one for 80$ and then he needs some mics to mic his drums (He doesn't want real drum mics, he wants mics that won't cost more then probably 100$ total). We have a mic that we curently use which probably was 10$, it's good enough for us, we plug it into an old guitar amp that we are no longer using. I have been asking around about recording, people recomend an 8 track recorder, the only problem with this is that most of the 8 track recorders don't do 8 track simaltanious recording. (We don't wish to spend any more then 550$ on a unit alone, we are each spliting the cost of the equipment that we all use, so the mic costs aren't included in our 550$ limit, we plan to buy all the stuff off of ebay) I was on IRC and someone recomended getting an 8 track analog mixer, mixing it down to 2 tracks and using the fostex FD-4, I was planning on doing this, but that brings up a whole new problem, what mixer to get, and no letting it go over 550$ for 2 units. I would be greatful if some one could make a list of equipment that we should purchas or what we should do.

Thank you for your time.

well...if your band sounds good...

eheh i dunno where to start... it's seems that none of u guys know much about recording, equipment, etc... so why not starting with a good minidisc recorder & a good stereo microphone? I am a sound engeneer & musician too, playing guitar on a band wich i record often with my porable md recorder and a stero mic! After some experimentation with your amplifiers and the right mic placement u can get a fairly good recording if your band sounds good!

try n-track recording software

I was using Cakewalk in my home studio for years untill I found n-track last spring. Here's a link to their fully-functional demo.
http://fasoft.com
From the main page you can get the download of the demo and there is also a page of links with music from users you can check out. This is THE recording software for low-budget trackers looking to produce a slick product on the cheap.
You will need to get your sound into the computer.I would recomend getting a couple of sm57s ($100 used the pair) and the little behringer mixer for another hundred new.
Good luck

Okay, my band is not going to do computer recording because I'm not gonna go drag my 2000+some$ computer over to my friends house, and his computer is a compaq, you can't upgrade them. As for starting out with a minidisk recorder, we don't want to go and get one for like 300$ because we want something real, and I want to be able to hook the recorder up to my computer so I can burn to cd's on my cd burner, thus making it worthless to get one of thos External Cd Burners for the recorder. I still need to know about the micing and stuff

It seems you already have decided...

...that you want a digital 8-track, for a maximum of $550. So, watch the ads until a second hand one pops up!
No you won't get 8 simoultaneous tracks of recording for that amount of money. But maybe you can get 4? You don't have to record the whole band at once.

I was talking on Mirc a while back and some one said if I don't record my whole band at once it becomes a real big hassel to match up the two recording tracks so it's at the right time. Yesterday I was talking on Mirc again when some one told me that if the recorder has 8 inputs then you can record them onto 2 tracks even if it doesn't have 8 track simaltanious recording, the fostex fd-8 has this arangement, so before I decide to but it I need to find out if this is true. And I can get an 8 track simaltanious for 550$ or less, it's called Ebay.

Well look at a site called http://www.digibid.com it's like E-bay but it's more customed to musicians...I also buy used equipment from a site called http://www.ugbm.com Go to yahoo and search on used recording equipment...Ebay is good but I'm just trying to give you some more options...

No, not on a multitrack. You play the tracks you already recorded while you record the new tracks and play in beat.

It's true.

Before you buy anything...

I suggest you learn a little bit more about recording. It will be hard to figure out what you want and need before you know how to do anything. Once you understand the basics, then you'll be better educated to help yourself understand the ocean of recording possibilities out there.

Why do you have to record at your friend's house? I don't understand that.

Good luck with all that.

Mark
