I have been recording my electric guitar with CEP 2.0 for the past while, you can check out my recorded music at http://www.soundclick.com/faith23 and http://www.soundclick.com/chewysband

-For those I panned out my guitars, double tracked them, used reverb, and eq for some.

I need help mastering my guitar, what effects should I use, my eq is poor, and you can tell my mixdown was horrible because it sounds ugly lol like it hurts your ears when you listen to it.

-Any suggestions?

bball, I will attempt to help but I am no pro at mic'ing amps. I would suggest you use a trial and error kind of approach. Try different things till one works. Great sound does not happen overnight.

It would also be helpful to know what kind of equipment you are using. Amp, mic, effects.

You may need to experiment with mic placement among other things. A great mic is a must!

Hope this helps a little.

I've got an Ibanez GAX 6-string Electric Guitar, Fender Frontman small amp with no reverb, Gateway 450 mhz PII, 128mb/ram, windows 98 1st edition, soundblaster 64D soundcard, Cool edit pro 2.0, a cheap pc mic (that white one, long stick looking thing), and myself playing the instrument.

-I've been trying to record for the past few months, and trying to experiment here and there.

-Have you checked out my sample songs? at http://www.soundclick.com/faith23 and http://www.soundclick.com/chewysband ????

-Please give me suggestions as to what effects, elements I need to improve, like for example compression, EQ, dynamics, reverb, etc. Thanks

Get a real mic and a preamp for starters. I can't listen at work but anything recorded on a computer mic usually isn't worth fussing to much over. They are okay for documenting a song but you can't really use them for any kind of quality recording.

what's a preamp? Do I have to buy it? I agree I need a better microphone lol.

Actually, if you get like....an SM57 to mic your cabinet.....if you crank your amp loud enough, you can get away with not buying a preamp, and just normalize your recorded track to 100% when it's recorded...BUT, some guitar effect pedals/pods can work as a good preamp. I mean, if you have an extra one that you arent plugging your guitar into to get your sound...you can leave it on a clean channel and plug the mic into it to boost the volume....

What about computer programs that emulate preamps or amps? I got this program called Revalver but it doesn't work that great with my scard.

Would a metal pedal like the Boss MT-2 Metalzone work as a preamp?

Hey, I'm trying to understand things a bit better. You said:

Okay, a guitar and an amp and a standard computer and soundcard. No mic to speak of. As for Cool Edit 2.0, did you actually buy it? I'm not asking for the obvious reason, but I'm doing a kind of informal survey, and I'd like to know so that I can know if I understand things as well as I think I do... If you catch my drift...

Good direct guitar setup

I really recommend Line6 pod into a bbe sonic maximizer into the recording input.
If you don't get the Line6 at least get the maximizer.($100.00)
Only use your E.Q. in a minimal way and let the maximizer give it depth instead.
One trick I use that really works is to mix your live guitar sound and a cd of some pro band that has a sound you like. Turn your track up and down see if you can hear it when it's low and everything else when it's high.

-do you got a sample of your guitar using this stuff that I can please listen to?

-the POD looks nice, costs around 200-300 bucks though lol.
-I wanna get the Boss MT-2 Metalzone 2 pedal, I heard it and it sounds awesome, every guitarist usually recommends it, especially for heavy metal guitarists.

uuuummm....no.

I think that if you really want to hear the actual sound then try your local music store. They should be able to set it up without any problem.

I think DJ Fingaz aka Reefer has one. Just beat him up and take his.

Definitely check out the J-station. There should be plenty of sample sounds online. It is comparable to the Line6 POD and usually runs about $150. The J-station has awesome sounds for heavy metal (great dual rectifier simulator). Nice thing about a J-station or POD is you can turn off the cabinet/speaker emulation and use it as an effects unit for your regular amp (no need for the MT-2 then).
