Ok i've recorded distorted guitars in the past and they have been fine... now they sound...well...you know when you put a blanket over a speaker and it sounds like muffled? it sounds like that and I'm micing my amp so what the hell is wrong? i dont want to screw with my Eq on my amp b/c i have my sound down how i like it...how can i replace the mic or soemthing to make it sound bright and stuff? do i need to run a mic pre amp for the mic? or do I need a compressor GODDAMNIT what do i need to do? I'm gonna go cry now and beat my head against a wall...I'll check back in a few

What exactly, do you have in terms of a signal path? (ie, what guitar? what amp??, what mic???, what pre????, what recorder?????)

It goes Mesa f-50 half stack > Shure SM57 > Behringer Eurodesk MX3282A 24 input mixer > Boss BR-532

My other gear like rackmount and stuff has been unhooked and put into my new house and this is wat I'm keeping in my current house until we move just for fun recordings...I have enough money to buy a new mic preamp under 150 bucks (my presonus bluetube is busted) should I get a new one? and i have a compresser too laying in my closet but it's not hooked up...

One problem is your idea that the EQ is 'set'. Your EQ settings could change for every track, song and change in mic or cabinet placement. If it nees more highs then give it more highs. EQ can change like the winds and the waters (or something like that).

I would try backing off the mic so you get a little more air. Make sure you are using proper gain staging on the mixer levels.

you can try these, but I could be wrong.

1)move the mic toward the edge of the amp, still facing straight.

2)Put the amp on a chair

3)press the lowcut on your behringer

play around, one of them might actually help your situation and save that $150 for a better pre ro whatever.

If you have access to a clothesdryer somewhere, stick your mic right inside the clothesdryer facing the back wall of it. Then put your amp up on a chair in front of the dryer and play your guitar into it. The sound you get from it is so freaking cool. Clothesdryer reverb baby.

as a new convert...have you read the million-post thread in the mic forum a la Harvey Gerst? It is damn long (the sticky thread at the top of the forum). You will have to read a lot of pages, but holy shit will you learn a ton, and there is a good detailed section on micing guitar amps.

Yeah, what cstockdale said. That thread is mandatory reading for everyone with a computer, internet connection, and a mic as far as I'm concerned. Lots of great stuff in there that is difficult to get anywhere else.

Dude You should just write down on a piece of papper your EQ setup you have right now (that you like, and don't want to screw with it)...and then screw with it to get the brighter sound you want.

Just a thought, don't mind me...I'm a noob.

Peace
