I am wondering how many mics, what type of mics, and where to position them for recodring solo jazz grand piano. Also where should the input meters be at to get the best sound.

And while I am at it may I also ask what is the best way to get a good drum set sound for rock tunes? I have used "OHL OHR w/ a kick mic too and it sounds yuckie. Is it the Mics or the VS880? With the drums I use up three of the 6 tracks I have too that way. It seems when I have tried to bounce the OHL OHR and kick to one track I lose even more sound quality. Any helpful hints out there?

Yo GnuToMusic& me too is Gnu:

I don't use Roland gear; however, I get great results using a Boss 770 drum box; I record it direct, as usual. Recording drums live, with mics, has to be a nightmare in a home studio; lots of balances and EQ problems.

I record synth and Korg SP 100 direct; I also use an ART mic pre and I sometimes send the piano and drums thru that device; however, it isn't always necessary to do that because the mic pres on my MD-8 are pretty good.

So, if you are recording live, through mics, you have a big job to get what you want.

You have a good recorder but you need to take advantage of the 20/24 bit recording standard of your gear.

Maybe you need to put drums on 3 tracks? {recording live into mics] You can also put the keys into two tracks; also you may need to work with reverb? A mic pre might help you. Check out the Roland forum.
