recording from turntables

hey all, i'm new to the forums but excited to get involved. i'm a dj...well more of bedroom dj, but i do a few shows here and there.

lately i've been getting into recording mixes and what not. i've always done it just plugging my mixer into the microphone jack of my laptop, but i realize its not the best way for quality recordings. i really do it this way because my knowledge on really technical recording is low. so really i'd like see what you all can suggest for recording vinyl. if possible some good/cheap options as well as what you think is the best way to go (i'm really interested in this so i wanna hear all the alternatives). thx in advance for any help.
 
wish i coudl help you but i do all my remixing on audascity i odnt have neough money to buy a good turntable. maybe sum1 else can help u
 
Are you ever going to be recording vocals? Or, are you only going to be using this for a turntable? What do you have now? How much m,oney do you want to spend?
 
actually, seeing your situation, but not seeing what setup you're using.... i'd assume you have your turntable(s) into a mixer, then out of the mixer into your computer jack. this is okay to do, but don't use the mic jack, use the line-in if you have one. and i like Adobe Audition (1.5) to record and mix, but use what you're comfortable with as far as software.
 
right now i'm using two numark turntables and a numark dxm06 mixer. i really don't have a number on which i'm willing to spend. this is just something i'd like to think about in the future.

this may sound like a real rookie question but may i ask what the difference is between plugging in the line-in and mic input?

i also personally use sound forge, thats just what a friend of mine turned me onto a while ago and its worked good for me.

also would a soundcard make any difference in my situation?
