morning bob ,
well here in australia we dont have a great choice either (theres a few options actualy) .. but SAE stands out from the rest , although its price tag might have a lot to do with that ! But there international , we have a main branch over here in sydney and even a branch here in perth , so if theres one in perth i think there should be one in LA.. so check that out ,its the school of audio engineering.. i think u can find it at http://www.sae.edu ....
Also have you thought about a course or degree in radio ... that may be another avenue .. But im wanting to take the same carreer move bob , so i bought some recording gear and started practising recording myself and other people , and thats given me a great start for when i start an audio course next year. Its a government course , well its cheap anyway !!! Three years long , at the end u get an advanced diploma of audio engineering... Sounds good , i checked out the studios at an open day last sunday and they are very nice indeed.. and spoke to some of the current students there ...thats a good way to make sure the course thats costing u so much is actually going to give you the relevent skills to actually get a position in the music industry .. or theatre fo that matter !
Its good to hear someone checked out the recording connection , i was wondering about that a while ago . Not that it would really help me in australia , mmm dont know , are they international ..?? Well best of luck bob , but definetly practical trial and error is a great way to learn , just hard to put it on your resum'e ... anyway thats my view..

There are threads on this topic if you search for them.

Alot of ppl say don't bother with the schools, just buy equipment and practice with it.

Alot of ppl think otherwise.

If you do some searching you should be able to find the old threads.

Try 'recording school' or something like that as your search string.

i definetly agree the practice thing is probly the best option .. but unfortunately larger commercial studios (if thats what your after) wont recognize this as source of training , well some might .. but definetly the best way i think is by yourself , at home in your own studio .. Plus you get to do some great recordings whenever you like ..
But i think i might opt for a school , mainly just for a recognized crudential...

Do it the old fashion way, kiss an engineers ass and intern for him.

Proveras, you live in/near Detroit? I think I know where that Recording Institute is...it's VERY VERY close to my house! I know of a studio on 9 Mile, so that must be it.

Saludos desde México !!!

No, I dont live in Detroit,
I live in Hermosillo, Sonora, México.

I know about this institute by internet.

cheers!
