recording drums with motu 828 mk3

Hi there.

I would like to record drums but the only soudcard I have is motu 828 mk3. It has only 2 mics outs in front witch I can set as I want and they sent phantom pover to (for example overheads like rode nt5)
For rest of set I would use :

kick - something dynamic ( probably at the moment sm58 , in the future d112)
snare top - sm57
snare bottom - sm58
room - unfortunately only one Se 2200 ( thats all I have )

Motu has lots quarter inch jacks in the back of it but sometimes is impossible to set the levels properly with cue mix ( program mixer to operate motu ).

I will appreciate any ideas.

Get an expander like the Behringer ADA8000 for $200.
(If you've got more money maybe a Focusrite OctoPre for $500)

Hooks up via ADAT giving you 8 more channels with pre-amps.
 
The quarter inch jacks are line level.
Cuemix will never set the levels properly because a mic's output is nowhere near strong enough for a line input.
For that reason, you'd need a mic preamp in front of each of the line inputs.

An ideal way to do this is to find a little mixer with 8 mic pres and 8 direct outs.
It might also be handy for convenient direct monitoring + routing.

Tim's solution is bang on too. Probably more bang for buck going down the adat road.
 
Thanks for sugestions. I thought about the ada8000 or motu 8pre but this costs a lot. have to spend at least 150 pounds.
I like the second Idea. once I had in my life something like yamaha nw10. it had line outs but since that time I dont know any mixers with line outs.
how should I find them. is there special name for them??

Those are just mixers.

Where are you going to plug them in, the line-in ports on the back of the 828mk3? That will consume those channels.

You could add significant noisefloor using a cheap-ish analog mixer to the chain.

Trust me, save up and get the ADA8000... then you'll have 10pres plus 8 line-ins simultaneously.
 
I think you right, also there will be lots off cables etc.
could you tell me more about that behringer? will i be able to record every single channel separetlly?
and all I have to do is just connect it via adat to my mk3.

I read some forums this morning about motu 8pre and they said its not a good idea, they also sugested to get another mk2 and connect it to mk3.
For me I has no sens. costs a lot of money and you still have only 4 mics ins.

I only threw out mixers incase you had one kicking around or some particular use for headphone routing and all that jazz.
If not, go adat. :)

I don't see the problem in using up the line ins though (as a side issue) unless you need them for some keyboards or synths or something.


There's no point in another 828, if that's what you meant.
You're right. Spending a load of money for 4 mediocre mic pres.

Ada8000, focusrite platinum octopre le, something like that would sort you right out.
 
thanks for the idea.
the one with mixer is not bad but adat is simple and I dont need to use so many cables. I will be moving whole stuff occasionally to record drums elsewhere so adat option sounds faster and tidier.

Cool. I sold my platinum octopre mk2 a while back.
Just be aware that the digital I/O was optional, so make sure it's there if you're looking up that model.
 
I mean that adat input and output was added by way of an optional expansion card fitted by the user.

If you shop for this model, just make sure it has the adat IO before buying.
