recording drums to minidisk vs. PC

I have been a little dissapointed by the sound I have been getting on drum tracks recorded on my PC. Using the same settings on my mixer, I sent one out to my PC and one out to my mini-disk. You wont believe the differance in the sound...or maybe you would...the minidisk was WAY punchier and almost sounded like the drums themselves rather than a recording. The PC recording on the other hand was just flat...just couldn't feel it like you could from the minidisk.

Any suggestions???

Obviously something's happening to your signal on the way into computer. You might be recording at low-res, or the converters on your sound card may simply be inferior.

In theory, the MD should sound worse than a PC recording (all things being equal), since MD is a lossy compression format that literally throws away a portion of the recorded audio based on the ATRAC algorithms. Even though the latest ATRAC algorithms are quite good, compared to lossless recording, it is an inherently lower-quality recording format.

perhaps its the crappy compression thats making it sound punchy?

I am using a Behringer 2004A mixer and a Terratec EWS88/MT soundcard with Cool Edit Pro 2.0. The sound that I got from the minidisk is what I would like to achieve on the PC. I know its possible, I'm just restricted by my inexperiance. Hopefully there are some simple solutions to this problem that I have just overlooked. Maybe just some settings that I need to adjust in the software. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated...
thanks
