Allright there lads. I'm pretty new to this game of home recording and I recently invested on a Tascam porta 414. I've written quite a few good tunes and have them recorded already but I don't have a clue how to record drums on the thing.
I read in a couple of other posts that people recorded drums on only one of the four tracks. How is this possible??
It would make my day if anybody could shed some light on this. Thanks.

Hey another Irishman!
You need use another mixer. Go from the tape outs of the submixer into sub-in on the 414. Put what ever track into record mode, meter it, and you're there. Actually you might be able to do this with the mixer of the 414. Input into 1,2,&3 (i use a min. of 3 mics on drums) pan 'em all hard right, and set it to record on 4. I've got the 424 and this works, I'm going from memory of a friend's 414, so, as always, you'll need to check out your manual. Try these out though. Cheers! -lzb

PS Slieve League is the coolest place I've ever been in my entire life!

i don't know how many inputs the 414 has... but say it has 3 xlr inputs (or just 1/4" inputs with preamps and you get either seperate preamp/s or converter/s) then you should just be able to setup 3 mics up into the recorder, buss all the channels hard left or hard right (or even, if you want a stereo drum recording pan however you want them) and then setup one track in buss L or R (or two tracks 1 buss L one buss R for the stereo version)....

i have a tascam 424 mkIII which has 4 xlr inputs... i usually setup 4 mics on drums so i just plug them in like normal, set the levels (and by the way i have always just been doing mono drums) and pan it all hard left... i have track 1 bussing left and hit record... then i go back, fix the levels and repeat till i got the sound how i want it

good luck
