recording crash question (hey Voxvendor)

Like you, Voxvendor, I sequence my drums. Unfortunately, I don't have a situation that makes micing up a full kit possible. I am attempting to record the cymbals individually but am having specific trouble getting the crash to sound natural. It tends to sound boxy and definately not smooth. I am using quality Zildjians that sound great before the mic. I have tried different positions but haven't had any luck yet. All I have to use right now is my AT4033 (into my AW2816 using its internal pre's) but am willing to pick up something else if I need to. Any advice on mic, placement, etc? Advice on improving my ride and hi hats wouldn't hurt either. Anyone else? Thanks
 
Hi Salty..

You have to really play with that eq... it took me a few tries before I got my cymbals sounding crisp and clear.....

I use an SM57 for my cymbals.. and it's placed on a stand and it's about 5 feet above the cymbal....

I point it directly down at the cymbal, but rather than the middle of the cymbal, I point it somewhere between the middle and edge of the cymbal.

I tried using my AT4033 once, but didn't like the sound it gave from the cymbals, maybe im just set in my ways....... see if you can rent an SM57.... I'd hate to see you buy one and find out you don't like it....

Download one of my songs as a guide for eqing your cymbal and just try and copy it....

IMPORTANT!!!

No compression on cymbals... AT ALL!!!

Good Luck.. It's an awesome way to do drums, and get them sounding solid in a home studio environment...

Oh.. and make sure your cymbal is horizontal on the stand.... If it's on an angle, some times the mic pics up funny reflections...

I've used DR770 drums with real cymbals too. I used a 4033 and I put the mic in another room just outside the door. Worked out pretty well.

Yeah.. 4033's are good.... But for some reason, I get sort of a thin whispy sound... and I've tried lots of miking techniques...


I seem to get more of an agressive rock sound with my SM57...


Strange eh?... Cause I know 4033 are good for overheads... But for some reason, I can get it to work for me..
