Considering this. Frankly I'm starting to feel it's too much to simply read stuff online or buy a book and think I can muddle through.

Has anyone done something along these lines? A course at a local school or business? Something online? Hired someone local? etc

There's so much on youtube I don't see the need to pay for anything, at least not initially. The basics (and even more intermediate) stuff is all out there. If you know what to search for, there's even more advance stuff too.

If you're more hands on, many of those tutorials are walk-throughs which would be identical to working with someone at your computer/their computer.

The Reaper manual includes links to files you can d/l then work with per the examples given.
If you take a class, you're still going to need to read stuff and buy a book!

Actually I shouldn't have said "online," not interested in that...as you say, there's tons of free stuff. I mean in person, hands on kind of thing.

I personally would love some hands on, personal training with some of the people here...Not to mention getting to meet some of these wonderful, nice people. Unfortunately, I don't live near anyone, and the one's I'd want to spend time with may not want to spend time with me :laughings:
...AFA getting some time with Fab Dupont, Mutt Lange, or George Martin; as much as I'd probably learn from doing time with any of these people, it's retention that's necessary. The big problem would be finding someone that uses similar gear (or being able to afford what they use). Hands on + retention + dissimilar gear and software = nothing gained (well, very little).
The middle ground, of course, is the Bay area or Nashville area recording schools (there's probably others around). Wanted to do that when I was a kid and can't imagine how my life might have gone if I'd just gotten the money together to go to San Fran in the early 80s and get through a few years of training...$1500 twice a year was a lot of money back then. Kind of still is. :)
