recording choir with sountrack accompaniment

Hello.

I might (probably) am missing something obvious, but how can I record a choir that sings to soundtrack and allow them to monitor the soundtrack with out picking it up in the recording?

Headphones, maybe...but personally I wouldn't do it, for a few reasons:

1. Since it's a choir, then you're gonna need a lot of pairs of headphones. Hardly conventional...

2. Even with headphones on, it is likely that they will be able to hear the actual performance coming through. The singers aren't gonna like the way it sounds because they don't understand that they're also hearing the real thing, and you'll get a bunch of choir members whining at you. I actually think that would be true with monitors rather than headphones.

3. I don't think a choir needs to monitor themselves. You know better than they do about how it's supposed to sound anyway.

I've recorded a few choirs. If the choir consists of 5/6 singers who have the material down pat, then you can go with the headphone amp.distributor/-if you have the means that is,, otherwise, let them listen through the monitors and don't worry too much about the bleeding. Unless the music is really cranked up,it won't be noticable.

If you are in a recording studio you can break them up into sections and record 10-12 at a time using headphones.

Most big studios have the ability and you have better control over the blend that way.


If you use monitors, you simply use a phase cancelation on the recording to eliminate most of the leakage from the monitors after it is tracked.

OK, I know that phase cancellation has to do with the inversion of frequency and that on some mixers there's a little button that inverts phase, but I don't know how to cause a phase cancellation. Can you help me out there?
