Hi. I'm new here. Don't know nuttin about
recording. But, this is what I want to do:

I just want to be able to record myself with bass line, guitar (for cords and lead), and vocal--with possible drum of some sort in the future. What could I use without having to buy lots of recording devices? 4 track maybe? Sorry for lack of knowledge but thanks for some.

You could go the 4-track route, but do you have a fairly up to date computer to use for recording? You might be able to start out using it without buying much of anything to get some recording experience. Before you do that however, learn the basics on recording by checking out the main Homerecording.com page and get to readin'. :) Dragon covers lots of stuff to start out with there. Oh, and welcome to the BBS.

Yo Wolf of many Theories:

Get an 8 track machine to record man. Four tracks are very limited; if you think you can bounce tracks, you can; however, once you bounce, say, bass and Guitar, you can no longer tweack each instument; you can only tweah that track with two sounds and that won't do you much good because bass requires a certain type of tweaking and guitar a different tweaking for various sounds, etc.

So, man, take my advice; buy whatever box you like but get 8 tracks and be in control of each and every track. For me, 8 tracks is usually enough; for the pros, maybe more tracks, like 16, 24, etc. But, get 8, not 4.

IF you're willing to spend some time learning to operate/program a small MIDI equipped keyboard, you could use it for drum and bass and even keyboard sounds. In this scenario, you may find 4 tracks to be enough since you'llonly need them for live guitar/vocals.Cheers!

The man will still need a mixer. I'm assuming he's looking to minimise the number of boxes in his life and the Lantern has it right, in my book.

Eight are great! TheoryWolf - if you've got the moolah, get yourself a Roland BR-8:

8-tracks, effects and a simple rhythm machine and all sorts of guitarist-friendly stuff.

I should know - I own a Roland VS 840...sob.
