recording bass

i recently purchased a firestudio interface and plan on using the instrument input while also recording threw a mic, has anyone tried this, how were the results, just curious if i will need to purchase a preamp as well.

idk about the recording but your more likeley to get a lo-fi warm sound with a mic and a more tight sound with di and you dont need a pre since the firepod has them built in sounds like a cool little exprement, love to hear the results

i SOMETIMES will record the line out of my bass amp directly into the firepod, as well as with the bass cab mic'd up, but most of the time i'm lazy so i just run the line out from the amp into the Firepod and it sounds pretty damn good.

It is common practice to record a direct signal and a mic'd bass signal. Normally, you would use a DI box. You will run into a problem when you plug the bass into the Firepod, you won't be able to plug into the amp.

If you are talkign about using the direct output of the amp, you need to use the line input on the firepod, not the instrument input.

i was talking about using the direct out on the amp, sorry for the confusion, didnt know to use the line input rather than the instrument in though, thanks, i have heard mixed reviews on recording in this manner. thanks for the replies

yeah in my experience, and with my amp, i've had some good bass sounds recording it that way.

The best way to do it is take a DI of just the bass and mic the amp. The amps DI signal normally has the EQ on it, so it is really close sounding to the cabinet.

I get great results with just a DI bass track, but that is totally dependent on if it's a good sounding bass and a good player, a lot of the bass sound is in the fingers.

My fav way is, as agreed by a few above, a blend of DI & mic'd cab tracks - generally from a split signal though double tracking is an option if you're rehearsed enough.
In a hurry or too much noise around the house? I use, shoot me now, the Behri BDI21 & it's REALLY good (particularly for the money).
& almost always I do a few dB EQ tweak peak at 3kHz so that there;s just a little extra definition to cut through the mix.

I have a Firestudio, I record bass through the instrument preamp all the time. Sounds fine.
