Is there any difference between recording bass with the PODxt and with the POD that's made for bass? Pretty much the same thing with different presets or a whole other animal?

It's a whole different animal since the whole unit is based on algorithms. That doesn't mean that you can't use a standard POD for bass, just that the bass pod will most likely give you more flexibility and ease of use with bass tracks. Personally, I think the bass pod is much more useful and convincing on bass than a podxt is for guitars.

Hey guys, not to hijack the thread, but I have been looking at getting something like a POD xt, as I don't have a great amp, mic system for my guitars. I am currently recording using the amp modeler in my digital 4 track. Is the pod worth the money, as I can't use a real amp due to noise, and how close I would have to be to it? I just started looking at stuff today, so if you had some input, I'd like to hear it. Thanks.

As a professional mixer I can tell you that Pods butcher so many records you would not believe it, and I have never heard it where they have really helped. You would be far better off using a Boogie Studio pre amp (about 300 on ebay) or a Sansamp.
Also if you are looking ot record bass, a decent DI will work much better in the mix than a Pod track.

I own a PODxt but have not used it to record direct; just doesn't hold up to an amp. Use a real mic & amp for recording electric guitar if you can. For the price of a PODxt you could buy a small tube amp used and a cheap microphone (SM57 is low cost and sounds good). If playing the amp loud is an issue and you want distortion a pedal or a POD is good in front of the amp to record at low volume. If an amp & mic are out of the question then expect thin sounds from the POD (or any digital simulator) going direct

Sounds about right. I was about to sell my PODxt until I heard someone here play a bass track through a V-Amp (the one for guitar) which sounded phenominal. I've made a few prests for bass on the PODxt since and am getting closer to the bass sound I've been looking for. Strange though; I have a Avalon M5 preamp and am getting better bass through a POD going direct...(?)

Thats not that strange to me. The Avalon is meant to process your sound in a whole different way than something like a POD does. In the end, the only thing that matters is how it sounds and which sounds better.

yesterday a band came over to record "a rehearsal in high-speed tempo",
lack of time was an issue so it all had to go extremely fast,
bassist played trough his Bass-pod, it was a grey behringer in a silly rounded form, think it was the Vamp or something,
i was dissapointed by that machine, i thought it would have acted like a compressor and some EQ... but on one song the bass was peaking like crazy, the other it was damn silent, yeah sure, there were phaser effects and distortion which i consider crap for recording...
tomorrow they're coming over to re-do 5 of the 23 songs we did yesterday,
i'm pluggin him in one of my compressors instead,
might be a real nice toy to play with live or during rehearsals,
but for recording....
i'd pass on those PODS, a simple compressor gives me more controll...
but thats just my thoughts..
