With a decent recording programme, an interface, some good mikes, effort, instruments, some reading up and application and alot more besides, all things musical are possible.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to grimtraveller again.

Just starting out? Then the answer is no! You need some half-decent equipment and experience. There's a learning curve.

I think spiveyjoe20 is concerned, primarilly, with, what can be done as opposed to the how and the time it will take. I think the focus is "with this equipment, is this possible ?" which is a useful first step. If he's not aware of the need to read up, practice/apply and the learning curve, he soon will be !
And we will be there to guide him. :D

That is a great and encouring response, grimtraveller.

spiveyjoe20, I remember my first recording. To actually get it done and completed was such a thrill. I listen to it now and cringe at teh dreadful quality of the recording and finished sound, but hey, it was the first step on the learning curve.

Go forth and multitrack.

the answer to your specific question is no - you can't get a good recording from just a laptop and cubase.

If you add an audio interface and some decent mics then you can, but not with just a laptop.

The CD will be CD quality no matter what, Could be CD quality awful rubbish or CD quality slice of heaven, That's up to you and will depend on, amongst other things:

*Well written well rehearsed materials
*Good musicians with the necessary chops to nail the songs
*Well thought out position of the musicians in an acoustic space to maximise the quality of the sound they produce
*well thought out mic choice and placement to capture the best possible recording
*Propper gain staging of the recording chains to maximise the quality of the signal going into the computer
*Someone to mix the recorded tracks (if indeed this will be multitracked) with a solid vision of what the final song needs to be, what as objectively as possible serves that musically and what does not and the knowledge authority and ability to cut away what is not needed and maximies what is
*And if this is to be brought up to something approching commercial CD volume (loudness) someone who understands how to EQ, compress, & limit a finished mix without sucking all the life out of it in the process

There's a lot more specifics in terms of gear, plugins, mics, etc etc but IMP that's all irrelvant if you dont have the above

Thanks for the insight.I have a tascam us 600 interface with cubase recording software with pyle pro microphones that someone gave to me.Im going to be playing drums my brother will be playing keys and all other instruments will be arranged by me and him.Is that a good start to a good cd

Ditch the mics. Sorry -- They're absolutely horrible things.

For the uninitiated, you can pick up their "58" for about $15 - New. And that's the expensive model.

.Is that a good start to a good cd

Anything's a good start for a CD. Like someone mentioned above, anyone can do a CD. The question is, will YOU be happy with the result. Not sure what kind of answer you're looking for here. You've recieved a few great responses, as well as honest opinions about the mics and gear you're using. Now, it's all about how high YOU set your standards.

So, can you record a CD with the equipment you have? Yeah, sure. Knock yourself out and have a good time.
