Greetings people,

I have decided to pick up the old guitar and record some songs via an interface and laptop. it must be an early 30's crisis but i'm up for it!!

I have read the newbie guidelines and things have slowly started to sink in, but I need advise on the best equipment and software to get.

I intend to record with a guitar and mic with drum samples. Obviously, everything needs to be user friendly but with enough quality to throw it onto a CD.

Please forgive my amateurish post and hopefully one day I can advise others (you never know)

I would be grateful for any comments and help.

many thanks.

Laptop is 6gb ddr 3 with 500 hd.

As far as recording software goes, you can't go wrong with Reaper. Round here, it seems to be the dog's bollocks.

N-Track Studio is like $70...and pretty "pro-ish", plus not as kludgy as a lot of "free" crap.

Once you get past the 30-ish bug and decide to stick with it...there plenty of really good DAW apps out there to upgrade to.

Thanks for your help.

Does anyone recommend a decent studio?

User friendly and DAW software don't often belong in the same sentence for a noobie....

Consider a standalone recorder if you have limited aspirations.

Do you have a budget in mind? Please don't say "as cheap as possible" or "under $200"...

Thanks

Not so much anymore. There are some DAW packages that are VERY easy to use and intuitive. As a newbie myself, I was impressed with the simplicity of Garage Band on the Mac and, on the recommendation of another user here, I downloaded the 14 day trial version of Mixcraft 5 which is pretty much Garage Band for the PC. Withing a couple hours of downloading it, I was able to put together my first mix using clips, live performance and MIDI instruments. Cost is VERY affordable and it seems to me, a newb, to be VERY powerful as well.

I started with a standalone myself but quickly realized that I wanted to expand beyond that. Direct to PC was the way to go.

YMMV.
