I've been asked to do a voice over for a game.

It must be in WAV format, and must be standard CD quality 16 bit.

I have a mic in my laptop and a webcam mic.

What's the easiest way to do this in Windows or Linux?

You should be able to just download Audacity and record it to that using your laptop/webcam mic. It probably won't be great quality though...

In WinXP you can use the built in recording program. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to Entertainment, and then click Sound Recorder. But a built in mic won't be even close to adequate.

Sorry, I should have said I'm on Windows Vista Home Premium. I tried Sound Recorder, my webcam was much better on noise. I've got Audacity beta now.

So, what mic should I buy (under £100), and how do I soundproof against traffic noise? (I don't mind recording at 3am).

Thanks for your help.

A USB microphone like the Blue Yeti would work for you for if you get a conventional microphone you will also need an interface.

Mics

Thanks everyone. I'm taking this in. I just hooked my webcam onto my V-neck sweater and it worked OK. You can hear my breathing but only when I'm sighing etc; that's OK in the context. I'll have a look at Blue Yeti. Then it's whether I need to sit in my wardrobe with a torch to screen traffic noise. ;)
