Shure Beta 58 through an RNC compressor worked well for me last night.

Whatever you do don't let him hold the mic. Put it high enough so he has to look up and keep him at least a foot away from it.

Yeah, compress the living crap out of the track.

Here is a song that this guy I know who had a basement studio did. http://www.drumroomproductions.com If you check out his site I think you can see what gear he has. I think he used either a 57 or a cheap condesnsor and compressed it. I will find out more for you if you like the sound of it.

I use an SM58 and a lot of compression. if I need some more dimension or space i usually add some delay really quiet in the mix...so you can't really hear it when the music is playing, only if the vocal track(s) is/are soloed.

that would be my basic starting point anyway...

Well, generally, I'll set up a mic.

Then I'll have him/her sing.

Then I'll hit "record."

When it's all done tracking, I'll play it back.

Well, for a screamer, I recommend shock therapy. For a growler... maybe the vocalist just needs more sleep.

My one piece of real advice... NOT a ribbon mic. Beyond that... distance cures all. If you really want the proximity effect, you can fake it with EQ in the mix....
