Here is a song that this guy I know who had a basement studio did. http://www.drumroomproductions.com If you check out his site I think you can see what gear he has. I think he used either a 57 or a cheap condesnsor and compressed it. I will find out more for you if you like the sound of it.
I use an SM58 and a lot of compression. if I need some more dimension or space i usually add some delay really quiet in the mix...so you can't really hear it when the music is playing, only if the vocal track(s) is/are soloed.
Well, for a screamer, I recommend shock therapy. For a growler... maybe the vocalist just needs more sleep.
My one piece of real advice... NOT a ribbon mic. Beyond that... distance cures all. If you really want the proximity effect, you can fake it with EQ in the mix....
