Ok, I just ordered the mr8 from music123 and it should be here in a few days to record my emo hardcore band. I also bought an MXL studio mic for vocals, a mic preamp, studio headphones and monitors so i have pretty much what I need. Oh, and the guitars both go through digitech rp200's with custom effects. should we mic amps or go direct?

My band has 2 guitars (one rhythmn, one lead) bass, drums and 2 vocals.

I was just wondering if anyone could give me some details on what kind of tricks we could use to record all of us on the mr8. I've had experience with an AKAI DPS12 if that helps, so I know a lil about what I'm doing. Just never recorded drums.

I would also like to know what software is best for mixing/mastering and messing with the EQ. I was using N-track studio, but didn't know if there was anything better or easier to use.

Last but not least, this is my first post and I hope to be able to post mp3's of our songs in the future. I have enjoyed the ones i've heard on here posted so far. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

anyone?

I know theirs gotta be some experts out there that can help me?

Welcome to the club!

As far as recording guitars, I tend to favor recording direct if you can ( I use a POD) BUT, if you have good mics and preamps, well I would try both to see.

Are you recording the whole band at once? Are you backing your tracks to PC to save room on your CF card?

I need more info:)

Look forward to hearing your work.

more info...

I'm wanting to try and do this... if it will work

Record a base track of the rythmn with guitar, and then after that.. record the drums.. we are probably going to get proper drum mics from another band we know, but just in case we don't whats a decent way to get a good sound on acoustic drums with minimal mics? I just also realize that no matter what we use, we can only use 2 channels. Thats fine.. so maybe someone can give me some tips on that.

after we record the drums.. I wanna clear them off the mr8 onto my pc and then us the base guitar part thats left to record the other parts, and then zap those to pc and mix them in n-track. I've always had a problem with levels being too high, and not getting all the songs to sound the same volume (on the dps12)

my mr8 WILL be here tomorrow.. so any suggestions u might have are welcome. I also wanted to know who it was that posted the clip of a punkish type tune that they recorded with the mr8 I think his name was brandon. Thats kinda the sound we are going for.. and your sounded awesome, so i'd like to get in touch with him if i could.

thanks again

If you record bass and guitar parts before drums, I would reccomend setting up the click track on the MR-8. That way you players will be tight with the click track and then the drummer can use the click as a guide as well.

Another Idea that is probably easier is to have your guitar player or bass player play into headphones for the drummer so that the drummer can record their drum tracks with another musician in the band as a guide. The headphones will keep the guitar players amp from being picked up in the drum tracks (bleedover)

If you are planning to use only 2 mics for drums, I would recomend a great kick drum mic like an AKG D112. For Mike number 2 I would suggest a codenser mic to hang over all the drums to pick up the cymbals, toms and snare drum. There are a lot of those to choose from but make sure that you get a tube pre amp to use with that condenser.

Another option is to have one of the guys in the band spring for a cheap 4 channel mixer so you could at least mix 4 drum mics into two stereo channels.
