recording a bass!?

okay, i dont know what i should do at this point..

thus far i have bought to record my bass:

- Audiophile USB (M-Audio)
and a
- DI Box

Now... i have a di box, but the only output is XLR, and there are no XLR inputs on my Audiophile... what do i do?

Should I get an XLR -> 1/4" adapter?

Should I go out and buy a mic and preamp to mic my amp?

Hi,
Think you better look out for an audio interface wich has a high-impedance instrument/line input. If you like M-Audio products, you should check out the MobilePre USB. It has 2 of them and 2 mic inputs and a Phantom-power switch.

It would be cheaper to try out the XLR to 1/4" adapter! youandi - what DI did you buy? The Sansamp one has both XLR and 1/4 out.

I bought an active Behringer.. umm DI-100 i beleive.

I'm just wondering if the XLR -> 1/4'' adapter changes the impedence, and thus rendering the DI useless? is this the case?

Am I better off getting a preamp with 1/4'' out?
 
If you are planning on recording more than just your bass, you might think about getting a preamp. There is an xlr to 1/4 adapter that changes impedance, but it costs $25 (or so) and clearly says that on the side. A normal ($5) adapter will not. If I'm not mistaken, you could just plug your bass into the audiophile, I don't think the inputs are balanced (or mic level)
 
You don't need a DI, just plug your bass right into the M-Audio box's 1/4" input.

You also don't need a preamp, the M-Audi IS a preamp.

I think the MobilePre is a preamp.

I was going to get the MobilePre, but they didn't have it, so for some reason which i cannot recall, I said yes to the Audiophile. I think i'd be much happier with what the MobilePre has to offer (XLR) and I made a stupid choice really.

Sigh, gotta learn somehow.

No, just checked. Audiophile doesn't have a preamp.

Does anyone know what the Omni Studio is like? Bah, I have tons of time to think and save up.

I have it and like it a lot. I get a decent clean bass sounds going direct into the pres and inserting a compressor. If you are only recording bass, though, you might look at the POD and VAMP products.

andyouandi - get a used Sansamp Bass Driver DI, they're easy to find - you'll probably like it and if you don't you can sell it again for what you paid for it.

Sansamp Bass Driver ...it's a good thing. Quick, simple sounds good. Lots of different tonal options. It IS amp modeling, but I find it very usable. However I am saving for an Avalon U5 to use as my main bass DI.
 
I either take a line out of my amp or just plug right into the line in of my soundcard with a Radioshack 1/4 to 1/8th adapter (signal shows "left" on the card).

here is a sample just plugged into the card ... it's just a rough bass take over a live acoustic/vocal track so my singer can nit pick the line.
