me and my band want to be able to record just some decent quality stuff. we have 2 guitars, a bass, drums, and vocals. we want to record simultaneously and for that i came up with a set up that i believe would work and i was wondering if any of you might be able to tell me if it sounds ok

Behringer EURORACK UB2222FX-PRO Mixer

i was going to run the xlr outputs for the main room mix into the xlr inputs on a

Fostex MR-8mkII 8-Track Digital Recorder

and record the two tracks simultaneous there.

i know i could get a firepod or something like it for the same price but i have a friend that might be able to get this stuff dirt cheap for me so i wanted an opinion on it first

would that work?

umm i guess. it would probably be better to use a firepod or similar for that wouldnt it? so i can play with each individual track better

Getting Started

Matt,
Start with recording individual tracks at first and not with a "live room sound"
If your guitar amp does not have an xlr out get an adapter. if you can record more than one instrument at a time go for it, but do not use mics set up in a room or in front of amps to start with. The only thing you will want to mic will be the drums and the singer.

Figure out how to record one track. The figure out hoe to play back that track and record a second track at the same time, (while listening to the previously recorded track)

Good Luck

Recording with a mixer

I forgot to mention..If you are using a mixer, most likely you will only be ABLE to record one tract at a time. Most mixers have only one stereo channel output. So, with that in mind, download a free recording program like Audacity, or go buy one, then run you mixer output to your PC line in or mic in. You will then be able to record one stereo track at a time.

if you are going from the stereo outs of the mixer you COULD pan all the drum mics to the left and the guitars and bass to the left. then hook up the left out on the mixer to track one on the recorder and the right out on the mixer to track two on the recorder. that will at least give you two tracks to play around with. it'll be in mono, though. the best option would be to record the drums and just one guitar like this and then track the rest of the guitars and bass and vocals separately. just a thought. a firepod would be better though :D
