What low end stuff actually records 8 tracks at once? Tape of any size, digital, or multi channel soundcard.

As long as you have 8 inputs to be recorded, usually any recording software that records multiple tracks will work.

Some of the 8-track casettes do it to. That's the most low-end I can think of. :)

How much money do you have to spend?

Do you really need to record 8 separete tracks at once? As an alternative, would you be okay with using a mixer to combine some of the inputs into fewer tracks in real-time? Some people for example will record a drum kit as just one or two tracks by using a mixer to combine the different mic inputs into fewer recorded tracks. This unfortunately makes it impossible to go back and change the levels of individual inputs after it's recorded, but sometimes sacrifices have to be made somewhere to save some $, or due to equipment limitations, etc.

I use a Delta 10/10................super sweet...all I will ever need...

A Motu 8 costs just about the same and has better converters...and is expandable up to 4x8.....32 tracks with great A/D converters....pretty sweet if you ask me....

Mixing down to a stereo drum image would get us to 8 tracks (gtr, gtr, bass, 2 drums, 3 vocals). You got the idea, record first and tweak the levels afterward because we might like a different mix on a different day or we might let a different set of ears mix/master it.

Lots of others,... including:...

Tascam 688 cassette Portastudio,
Tascam 388, 1/4" reel Portastudio,
Tascam 238 Syncaset, 8-track cassette, (requires external mixer)
Tascam 38, 1/2" tape recorder, (req. mixer)
Tascam TSR-8, 1/2" tape w/dbx, (req. mixer).

All of these vintage units can be found for reasonable bid amounts. Condition varies. Of that list, I've personally used the 38 & 388, and I think they're just swell. The 388 is probably my favorite. It's the king of Portastudios, w/8x8-8-simul capabilty, that looks cools and sounds great, too.

The 388 may be found in the ~$400 range, depending on the day, & the 38 or TSR8 1/2" format recorders will be ~$350-$400, minimum, sometimes double that, depending on condition and bundled accessories. The 238 will run appx ~$175-$250, and the 688 will be ~$300-$450. There's a brisk used analog market on Ebay. Go find it, just search "Tascam", "Fostex", "Teac", etc., as well as others, too numerous to mention.

SO,... eh,... I'm an analog enthusiast, and those are my recommendations, above, with further exception of the Yamaha MD8, which is really a 4-Buss designed porta-studio-format-type unit, but through a combination of Buss and Direct recording, the MD8 will record 8-simultaneous tracks to Minidisc.

All the obove mentioned gear may be found used, at fairly reasonable prices. I'm not inclined to recommend a purely digital solution to your question, although digital's out there, if you want it. (The exceptional Yamaha MD8 is an analog/digital porta-format hybrid). That's my post. Thanx. ;)
