Hi!
I'd like to get a 2 track mixdown deck for my project studio.
I'd like to know what you folks would recommend. I want pro quality, but affordable.

Specific models I should consider and where to find them?

thanks
Dave

I assume you want open reel and not cassette ? In that case you'd want to look at something like the TASCAM 22-2 or 32-2. These are no longer made. Your best bet is eBay but be VERY careful how you shop. Another option is the TASCAM BR-20 which can still be bought new:

Go for an old MCI or Studer. They are pro decks and can be had for some mighty low $$$$ these days. BTW: They also weigh a friggin ton.

Some people use a Tascam deck, I do not use a Revox machine but a Wintel PC, an Akai stereo 4-track 7-1/2-ips machine and a Telefunken T9 which weights 130 pounds (without case - the case adds another 80 pounds) and offers 30 ips tape speed.

Tascam 32

I got a good deal on a tascam 32 and it's just great!
I'm not sure, but since it is half track, I think the specs are actually a tad better than the BR since it doesn't use any track space for encoding.

The BR20T version with time code uses the center guard band that's normally present on all two track decks for the time code channel so, there is no performance loss with this design, with regard to track width.

Cheers! :)

Tascam 22-2 is a good small 2-track machine but only up to 7 inch's reel.
Tascam 32 you can use 10-1/2 reels.
There is also another beefy model with more features called: 42 .
