You are going to get many responses on this. There are AT4040's on ebay for just under what you want to spend. I really like mine for vocals and acoustic. I don't know how it would work with a trumpet.

yes the 4040 does look nice, aftr a lot of research came across a few mics that have all have good reviews and found a few really good deals, like the marshall and 3035 mics. need help decing on a idmic from this list, if theres little to no difference ill get one of the cheaper ones, and if so which one, and if the shure or 4040 are much better which one to get?? cheers
marshall mxl v-88:$120
at 3035:$120
shure ksm27:$200
at 4040:$223

Some of the MXL condensers are ridiculously cheap. Also consider some of the Rode mics.

4040 is a mic you will use always, not just until you can afford better

A 4040 and an SM7...tough, tough choice between the two. If I *had* to choose one over the other I'd probably go with the SM7, simply because it's more flexible.

YUP!

SM7.......if I had to pick just one.

(NOT "SM57", but "SM7")

WAIT! WAIT! I thought we had to pick one from his list. If I could only have one mic it would be SM7, Whew!

The brass love the SM57...plus theres good holders for them right in the bell...Id look at a better pre in that range Line6 UX2 is way more versatile.

For trumpet? Ribbon mic. Definitely. For male voice? Try the ribbon and see if you like it. If not, I'm a big fan of the CAD M9 for that.

KSM 27 or AT 4040 are both extremely good mics for under 250, an sm7 is around 300, all three are very versatile and sound good on vocals, the ksm27 and at 4040 can be used on guitar acoustic and electric, and as drum overheads, just in case your looking to record something different down the road, I've never heard them on brass

supposively the ksm 27 makes a great choral mic

I'm a microphone guy and thus biased, but this question is sort of like asking "what kind of meat should I get to go with my salt?". There was a time when engineers considered the microphone for the application first.

It's such a basic consideration that I never really think of it. I think it terms of chains...always. I know what I want, then I think it terms of the mic/pre combination I need to achieve it.

Ive allways thought that mics were easy...just look at what was used in the sessions that you want to sound like.

The trouble with under $500 is that there is nothing used in our favorite sessions availible at that price point...the only one channel being the Grace 101 and that is more of a wire with gain.

But there is this modeler on alot of studio lists Ive seen that gives you several sounds that are on our favorite recordings...its the line6 stuff...so why spin your wheels on something that isnt going to give you the sound you really want...while they have an 8 channel at this price point.
