Hi, I'm new here and could use some advise. I'm looking for a battery powered LDC condensor mic. I have a digital 4 track recorder and would be using the mic for vocals(solo & group), acoustic guitars and maybe even as a drum overhead. Any suggestions ? I'm on a tight budget and have been looking at the MXL 1006BP and MCA SP2.

Thanks, Edwood

There is also the MXL V63BP. Basically the same as the 1006.

What about the AKG C1000S ?

I was thinking more along the lines of a LDC but have seen some good reviews of this mic.

IMO, the AKG C1000S can be a little too hash sometimes... many times I'd prefer the Rode NT3 over the AKG C1000S... the NT3 is a tad darker and less hash than the C1000S, and the NT3 is what I'd call a medium size diaphragm mic... it also can be powered by a 9V battery, and sells for around $150.

EDIT: Added NT3 link.

ditto on nt3

like DJL says-go Rode NT3. 9v battery power and just powerful on acoustic guitar around 12th fret. I've been using one for over 2 years and I think its a "secret weapon" that doesn't get near enough coverage in these forums. I'm assuming you don't have a preamp? A cheap ART V3 would give you great results with this mic and give you phantom power so you wouldn't have to worry about a battery. The NT3 is a big mic, though, but its rugged and could maybe double up as a softball bat.

The Rode's a hypercardioid condensor

Do you feel this would be more limited than the MXL 1006BP or the SP2 ? I'd probably use it mostly for vocals (beatle-style; three guys around a mic). As well as, acoustic guitar and anything else I can get away with.

Also, how much would you pay for the Rode used ?

I've haven't used the MXL 1006BP or the SP2 so I can't comment on them... and you should be able to get a good used Rode NT3 for somewhere between $75 and $100 or so... keep an eye on ebay and etc.
