I need a very good general purpose condenser I can get for up to 400$ used... Any recommendations ?

Yo Gil:

You really don't need to buy "used" if you have 400 dollars in your budget.

You say you are looking for an "all purpose" mic? I don't know if any mic fits that description but I've read good reports on the AKG 4000. Now, that is a bit over your budget new.

If you decide on a "tube" mic, know that most tube mics will give you a colored response -- I sent back the AT tube mic I got because I don't want vocals changed or colored. I didn't know that about tube mics until after I posted a negative review and my colleagues here let me know.

I'd say search around the forum and see what you can learn. With your budget, you could get a very good mic depending on your tastes and ears.

Checkout the big thread and FAQ stickys at the top of our mic forum. If you can come up with a little more money... one of my favorites is the Shure KSM44.

Knock 12 off of DJL's recommendation and you get the Shure KSM32, which can be had most days for right around your budget and is a good all-purpose mic and can be a great vocal mic on the right voice.

I dont mean to EVER defend DJL for any reason whatsoever, but the multi pattern-ness of the 44 plus its MUCH bigger sound makes it worth twice as much as the 32(which I also like)...it is,however ,NOT twice as much making it one of the best bargains in HIGH_END microphones today.....The CAD M9 is nice one and is right at your pricepoint new.As is the ADK TL.

TRY BEFORE U BUY. Find a pro dealer with a reliable return policy.Put up yer cash ...live with yer mic for a week or so...return it or love it long time....

I agree with the general recommendations of the Shure mics. I'd also throw in the Audio Technica AT4050 in for consideration as a good general-purpose condenser.

I don't agree about the whole "bigger is better" point, though. :D I think the 44 is a slightly more colored mic than the 32, hence the bigger sound, but it could also be said that the 32 is a bit more honest and less flattering in comparison, which could be either good or bad, depending on the app.

I'll second the recommendation for the M9. It's a great mic at any price, but at $295 new from 8th Street, it's a steal.

I'm going to have to get my hands on a KSM44 to play with. I keep hearing great things about this mic.

I like my KSM32 too, but I seem to use the KSM44 more IMO it's more versatile... how long have you had your KSM32 and what do you think you use it for the most?

Only about 6 months. It gets used more for live performance than for recording. It's the mic we use for our bluegrass band. I like it on male and female vocal, especially for backing vox. It seems to fit in nicely with my other vocal mics (C1, CAD M9, SM7 and EV 666). I also like it for acoustic guitar, mandolin and banjo. I've mostly been using it as a different flavor from my 414 on guitar for songs with 2 acoustic parts.

Overall, I think it's a great mic and pretty versatile. I thought that for the money gilwe had, the 32 was a better choice. I've had limited experience with the 44, but it's a sweet mic, to be sure.

How come no one has anything to say about the Rode NTK.. I think its an excellent tube mic. Ive used rode nt1. shure sm58, ksm44 AT4030 and akg 4000 and im overall happier with my NTK tube mic to be honest.. Its given me the fullest sound with vocals, i mean true i dont use it to record kicks or anything but I think its an excellent mic, was suprised to not see it in this thread at all... hmm maybe yall dont like.. oh well im happy with it..

I end up using my ntk alot on vocals and acoustic.
re 20 is right up there too
baby bottle is pretty good for some folks, not as "big" as the ntk, but on some voices thats ok

Some colors are very beautiful, even when caused by a microphone.:D

The famous U47, M49, Elam 250/251 (used between $10-15k) are all tube mics.

I have the KSM32 and the NTK. For voice, especially mine I really prefer the NTK. It has a sheen to it that is very nice. The KSM32 is just a bit too dull. The KSM32 is probably a better all-around mic, but for the things I do most of, vocals and acoustic guitar, the NTK is just better. YMMV

Why does it have to be a condenser?

You could also pick up a used SM7 or Senn 441 for around $400.

That was interesting,

I read the reviews in the link that grahamware posted for the NTK and the KSM32. They were well worded discriptions of what I have found to be true about those two mics. By the way, I bought my NTK new from GC for $380 thanks to price matching.

Blessings, Terry

Another well regarded all purpose mic is the AKG 414.

Love mine
