i've got an ibanez sr300dx and i like it, but i'm looking for a 5-string now. i play mostly r&b, go-go, hip-hop band, and reggae styles, so i need a bass with a very good bottom that is not muddy.

my price range is $700 or less.

I've seen some Yamaha TRB-5P's (the now discontinued alder-bodied, piezo-equipped ones) on Ebay for around that price. Very balanced and rich tone, not the least muddy.

You might also be tempted to have a look at this:

A good P-style bass with flatwound strings will get you through any reggae-style lick you ever want to play.

I agree with the flat wound string....it works for me. I use two basses, p-bass with roundwound and j-bass with flat wound..totally different sound... I use the j-bass when backing up a guy on mostly acoustic guitar. Clean and deep.

Another vote for the Fender Precision. It's a one-sound bass, but it's *the* sound.

i'm a week away from making a purchase.

so far i'm considering:

fender p
ibanez 305dx (i've got the 300dx now)
tobias toby pro 5 string

MTD is Micheal Tobias Design. Gibson bought toby a few years back!

conklin groove gt-5 string bass

anyone familiar with this bass? it's on ebay, but i've never heard of conklin.
