recomendations for TOM'S mics...

hello,
I am loking for 3 mics for toms,
I prefer HYPER-CARDIODYNAMICS, for less lickage of cymbals and the next tom, my budget is about $210 us.

there are the samson r-11, shures and AT, maybe you know another brand with good - no expensive mics.
(what about audix mics???)

there are new mics out there so,
thats why I ask these in a new thread.

I use Shure AXS 6 for toms and really like the results. They're not hyper-cardioid, though. They'd put you a little over budget, too. But, I've been very happy with them.

The 41 HE I've used on everthing on the kit, and it works well for toms, ok on snare (57's much better though) nothing special on kick, and is decent as an overhead (cuz i got only one condensor ) I like it best on hi-hat (nice presence not too shrill) and inside my drummers 22" gong bass drum- sounds like a tympani! and of course it is an excellent vocal mic live.

I have 3 of the Samson's Q3 mics and have used them a few times on toms. They sound really well, are hyper-cardioids and have a pad and a bass rolloff switches. I imagine they'd be decent on a kick drum, too. It is a little higher then your budget, but not much.

R11-s might work ok, I guess, you get 3 mics cheaper then 1 anyway and they're hardly worse then the SM58. If you're on a strict diet, I suppose that might work

is that 220 for all three mics?? hmmmmm. maybe an sm57 would be your mic, I've got good results from them.

I know of a place where you can get 3 second hand Sennheiser MD421's for about US$450 for all three...

Why are you set on a hyper-cardiod mic? With that pattern there is a good sized lobe behind the mic that will pick up tons of cymbals and other noise. A

End your misery...

Just go and buy SM-57's. They are cheap in price, high quality for that application, and are what you have heard used for over half the toms you have heard on recordings.

If you want to spend more dough, get some 421's. Possibly the other half of the recordings you have heard used them on toms.

There is really little other choices then these two mics for toms. These two mics have been the standard for micing toms for years, and both have other suitable appliacations too.

Go with the winners that are established!

Why the 421's? Everyone thinks they are so great for recording toms. I think they sound good as long as you don't hit cymbals because the rear lobe is pointed directly at the cymbals overhead. I think a 57 would be better, plus if you have a rowdy drummer it take alot to mess up a 57.

I use the 421's and SM-57 and occasionally sn SM-7..they just sound good on toms, if you position them correctly you can minimize leakage from the cymbals...and whats wrong with a little mic leakage? I suppose if you want a dead/fake/processed drum sound you can use gates..but personally, I dont like gates on drums, it just doesnt sound natural to me.
