"Recollection" - new version -- rock instrumental.

brand new drum track.
using Toontrack Superior Drummer, Avatar kit.
completely different feel than the first version..
with a more 'rock' drum groove, than the original funky thing.

'from the ground up' new mix-
this is a much more aggressive mix than the original.

i think i need to bring the drums up more in the mix, yes, no?

i played some fun tricks with a 'room' mic on the final solo, how do you think it translated?

a pic of the wave before i mastered it. it sounds WAY better than the mastered version.........?!
but very quiet.... like U2's 'the joshua tree' in terms of final level. i think the average RMS is about -24. LOL

if you followed the original thread, i explained about getting the new (old) ibanez artist.

the story behind the song, is that back in 1979, i bought a brand new ibanez artist, and gigged with it for about 5 years, before i sold it to purchase my carvin. i had always regretted letting that guitar go, and a couple of months ago, i found a 1977 ibanez artist, almost just like my original one, and i just had to nab it.

so, the song is telling the story in 3 parts...

1st part, the search for the guitar
2nd part, the recollection of the sound and feel of the original guitar
3rd part, celebration of the new found guitar.
hehehe
simple.

all the guitar parts are the ibanez artist.
all guitar parts are double miced, using a ADK Hamburg as a 'room mic' on one side, and the Palmer Junction direct on the other side, typical for all 3 guitar parts.
the mic signal is fed thru an analog DBX compressor and tube mic preamp before hitting the convertor.

bass was double tracked, using the Sansamp Bass DI as a splitter- one track straight off the Sansamp, and the other split to my mesa boogie (tweaked for the bass)- mic was fed thru an analog DBX compressor and tube mic preamp before hitting the convertor., and the 2 tracks were blended to one bass buss, with compression and limiting on it.

i switched the original drums from triggering EZDrummer, to the newer Superior, with the Avatar kit...
and i'm still learning the mixer, and the multitude of mixer and channel options i have to find the tones i want.
gonna work on the cymbals for sure.

hm....

46 views/listen, and no comments, that's weird.

is the link screwy or somptin'?

I think it sounds fantastic, and that's a beauty of a guitar. Congrats on finding one again and being able to snag it. No nits from me. I can't believe that's Superior Drummer, wow, never played around with that but it sounds great!

Wow, just incredible - very Jeff Beck-ian. Did you play everything except the drums? I'm in awe. I don't have even the slightest criticism/observation. Excellent playing/recording/mix etc.

dewhitt
thanks man.
it is a nice guitar, for being a bit long in the tooth.
superior is just fine....
i've still got to learn to dial in the eq and compression on the individual pieces, to get them to do what i want them to....
it's very powerful that way.
lots to screw up!
hehe

bagpipe
thanks man.
J. Beck, WAS an influence, for sure, one of my earliest.
yes, i did all of this, as well as program the drums.
thanks for listening

Fuckin awesome, man. Great tone on all of the guits[dig the leslie sim(?)], exceptional performance.

Gonzo can I request a drumless track for this? It seems like just such an awesome play along. Plus I can use it for a sort of drum improv lesson on a drum forum I frequent on. With your permission of course.

hey mick!
thanks man, that 'leslie' sound your refer to, is not a sim..
it's my Fulltone Mini Deja Vibe pedal.

Ninja-
yeah, i'd be happy to send you a stripped out version...
probably be a couple of days..
i'll PM you when it's ready....

Loved it! The compositing, the playing and the recording! Top notch all the way. And I caught what you did with the room mic--I think it translated quite well!

This gets a big tick in my book.

Fantastic effort man. You're certainly getting guitar sounds that I dream about getting.

Do you have a count of hours to put this together?

Cheers,
FM

white strat

thanks!
yeah, the room mics are always a crapshoot for me, in terms of mixing it after i catch it.

i can pan it a thousand different ways, but it's not til i burn the final and play it on other systems, that i know whether it really worked or not.
it's a touchy-feely kind of thing.
glad you liked it...

pure.fusion
thanks man, glad you dig it..

hours count?

well, this one came together pretty fast.

i would have to guess i spent 2 hours writing and tweaking the drum track, including mix.

then, on the guitars, once i get levels and make a few rough passes thru, i knock the rhythm tracks out in about an hour.
that'd be for (4) rhythm tracks, so that's about 15 minutes each.

then, maybe spend a half hour messing with the 'solo' track.

bass, took about a half hour as well.
i probably recorded 3 passes, and then later chose the one that felt the best.

so, that'd be 4 hours total for miced tracking and drums.

mixing is another matter..
i mix in half hour chunks of time, and i might fiddle with a mix for 2 or 3 hours worth of tweaking and experimenting.

this song, since it had the original drum track tossed, i had to re-write a new track, after i had already finished the song, so that took another couple of hours.

but if you boiled it all down, to tracking and mixing the actual final thing, it'd be about 5-7 hours.
