Hey, absolute newbie here, and looking at other threads feeling a little out of my depth, although I'm sure yall had to start somewhere, so some of your experience would be helpful!!

I have a Dell inspiron laptop, Pentium 3m 1.5g processor, 512mg RAM, 60 gig hard drive and I think a Vortex AU8820 PCI Sound Card (which I'm sure I'll have to change to accomodate my plans) which I want to hook up with a recording system.
I'll be recording track by track, and also recording live preformances so I guess at least 8 inputs will be necessary. space and portability is an issue, so the smaller the better. budget is around £400 / $550.
Classic kinda 4-piece band stuff- electric & acoustic guitars, bass, drums, keys and vocals
I'm looking for (obviously) the highest quality for the lowest bucks, although I have no idea what I need equipment/software wise.
Looking everywhere on the web, and it's all getting a little confusing, so independand opinions more than welcome. Not bothered about new or second hand, just need some reccomendations on what I need, from soundcard, hardware and software for a decent setup.

Cheers!!

Theres many things I could tell you but not knowing what your needs are ie Mics/Compressors/Tube Pre's etc Makes it a little
more complicated, My advice would be to look and review other articles written in this forum (Equipment and the Mic area and any other forum here that holds you intrest here.
there are many great comments written about inexpensive gear
Just step away from the newbie area for a bit. Good luck
