I want to record a song that has a very quiet intro and mid eight, but the rest of the piece is loud and heavy. i want to know some hints about this .I'm using a roland vs 1880 i have good mics good monitors and dont want to (if i can help it)use external stuff, barring my chain into the vs unit. I can get a good compressor and some valve thingys(reel to reel for warmth you under stand) and any help would be great. i don't want to do alot of (any) cut and paste i want to cut as much as posible in the one take and will be more than likly be recording the whole band(git, bass ,drums) live together (vocals later) am i dreaming or is there help out there.

The most straightforward approach is to simply have the band play louder and softer in the required passages. Playing dynamically always comes out better than trying to pull off the same effect at the console, especially if the rhythm section is live.

I’m not that familiar with the 1880, but it does have mixer automation, right? Then I would have the band play both the louder and softer passages just so you can “save” each of the settings. Then when the band does its official take, it should be just a push of the button for the mixer to set to the loud passage. Of course, you may need to do a dry run before you commit to tape.

Hope this helps.
