rec distorted sound !!!!

Why is it that when I push the rec button on my cassette multitracker the audio being recorded gets distorted in the monitors (regular walkman headphones with a 1/4" adapter for the miniplug), just while I'm recording, why???

When I play it back, it sounds OK!!!

It just kill my inspiration through the recording process.

woudn't happen to be a Tascam Porta 02 would it? I have had, as well as friends of mine, the same problem with input for tracks 2 and 4 on the porta 02. Never really figured out why it happened though.
Im on 16 tracks of adat now though, so i havent really needed to figure it out. Sorry i guess that didn't help you much. Just wanted to say that i could relate.

No it's not the Porta02, but it's really close, it's the Fostex X-12!!

you should probably

try emailing someone at Fostex. I got mine to stop before but i can't remember for the life of me how i did it. Its something simple but i just cant remember.

Try turning down the main LR fader when recording.
