that won't work feiva, good idea though. you actually can plug them both into seperate usb ports and use them. if you unplug them you have to restart the program.

if you are picking the midi board up from a near location, just take it home and demo it with reason. i'm not at home right now but if my memory serves me correct, you can put the mouse over the play button and select assign and then move a knob or tap a button on your midi controller so that it's assigned to that pad.

i know this is a reason 3 thread, but im wondering if anyone is using a pad controller, like the MPD-16 or the trigger finger, to trigger sounds through MIDI in reason 2.5. Is this even possible? i know they say that 3.0 adds compatibility for these devices, but does that mean USB compatibility? I mean MIDI is MIDI right?

yes, it's possible. check the link i provided.
 
I use a Korg microKONTROL. It has 12 pads along with keys, and yes, i can control redrum with the pads.

Also, Yes you can have more than one midi controller hooked up to Reason.
James Bernard always uses two in the Reason demo videos on Propellerheads website.
 
damn that microkontrol looks badass...ive never seen that before. it has everything you could ever want from a controller. do the faders work in reason as well? what about cubase? im definetly gonna have to cop one of those.
 
Yeah, the faders on the korg control the faders on Reasons mixer/s.
the knobs control shit like, the main volume, release, decay etc... of any given instrument. you can control everything with it. (almost)

It also works right from plug-in.
Just install the drivers, turn on reason, select it from preferences, and it automatically assigns pads/faders/knobs etc... to different things in reason.
its great.

The downside....

The keys are smaller than normal.
It takes a minute to get use to, but not too long.
I actually prefer its smaller keys now.

If that bothers you though, it has a "big brother" with full size keys...

I think I might have to invest in one of those and use the oxygen8 strictly for the laptop. I have skinny long fingers so I gotta have the full size keys.

Take a look at the novation controllers. Best action of any non-weighted midi controller. The new ones map automatically with labels and have pads also.

One cool thing about the Remote controllers and reason is that reason will program the controls to the keyboard on startup so you dont have to map anything

What gear do you recommend for producers on a budget?



I recommend a APPLE G4 or G5 computer. You can buy APPLE Mini Mac for $499, Pro Tools LE MBOX $399, MPC 1000 $900, Motif Rack module $600 and Reason for $300.

wow thats what you call a budget? that was a lot of money. ive been building on my studio for over two years now and id say ive payed maybe 2 g's at the most. if someone who was just trying to get started asked me that question i would probably ask them which path they wanted to take.

if they wanted to use a computer, i would definetly not tell them to get a mac, unless they needed a doorstop. i would tell them to do some research, get on newegg or ebay and order all the parts they need to build a computer, including a recording soundcard, read a tutorial on the internet, and put that bitch together. then all they would need is some monitors, a mic, and a MIDI controller. if you do it right youre looking at maybe $1600 with the software you would need to make decent quality recordings. and not only that but you would have a computer that you could use for anything else you needed it for and not have to look at an ugly ass round white mouse.
 
i wouldn't personally discount the Mac. Macs are used a lot in studios. In fact, I learned most of my Sound Recording and MIDI on a Mac. Me personally, I think Macs are very capable of handling Audio applications out of the box. Buts Macs are a lot more expensive. For the cost of a Mac Mini, I can just wait till i save up $100 more and then buy a laptop from Tiger Direct. Thats affordability and mobility. Liake I said thought, Macs are a great for recording but for the price you pay for one, you can build a mega-monster of a PC that you can not only use for recording, but games, internet, video. Figure it like this, Macs are like your luxury computers, powerful but nto much you can do in the way of making them anymore powerful than they already are. But with a PC its like a sports car, you can tune it to go as fast as you need it to go. It all comes down to preference tho. Which is why I can go both ways. Why pay for something thats powerful when i can build something monstrously more powerful for less. :D
