Hello,

I posted this in the digital section as well incase there was some related expertise there. Here we go...
I've been using a combo of Cakewalk Pro Audio 9.3 & an INCA 8/8 card for about a decade now - flawless operation across four computers & from 98 to XP (still in XP).
I recently decided to try REAPER as it's good for callaborative work. After installing Reaper & running the set up I found that even though the INCA card was selected I couldn't get any play back from it.
I tested a media player - MPC - & it played back fine through the card.
I tried Cakewalk & it wouldn't either.
I removed Reaper & still CW wouldn't play back. I reinstalled CW & it would only come up with MIDI functions. I reinstalled Reaper & again - no playback.
I did want to keep CW as a heritage DAW for old projects & did want to keep the INCA card as it can do 8 in simultaneously and as a PCI card there weren't USB & latency problems.
Any ideas?

I know it's a pain in the ass, but whenever I get strange issues like that on a PC, I reformat and reinstall. I've found with XP that fixes almost every strange problem I've run into. It takes an afternoon, or more, but it's worth it to clean up once in a while.

Other than that, I have no idea!

Try a system restore to get back to where you were.

I've not experienced that problem with Reaper, and I use neither Cakewalk nor INCA. I used to use Logic till I switched to Reaper, and I use a Presonus Firepod.

Whenever I install Reaper (which I do frequently because I download every update), it has behaved itself very well.

Maybe you've checked your audio devices on the PC, as well as options within Reaper?

Reaper does not talk directly to the soundcard.

Reaper talks to the asio or wdm drivers, which then talk to the soundcard.

I'm betting you didn't set up the inputs and outputs in the preferences correctly....

Tim,
Thanks mate. That's possible BUT now cakewalk doesn't do play back either. I get an incoming signal in both but no monitoring or playback of sound. I can't get any answers fomr the documantaion about whether direct sound, ASIO etc etc are the settings I need for Reaper either.
Gecko,
Ta, I'll try the roll back on the weekend. it won't solve my problem BUT it will give me back cakewalk as fully functional.
aaron,
That def. is an option BUT a final one I hope. I've done a full back up JUST IN CASE I have to. Thanks.

When doing multitrack audio, you always want to use the ASIO drivers.
They are more efficient and have lower latency.

Reaper in no way touches the settings for your other programs.

Gek,
The restore worked for cake and after installing reaper agina all is well with the old ONCA 8/8. Now I have to try to set it up to like the Zoom 16 as an alternate. Thanks for the reminder about that simple step.
