Now really, somebody level with me here... how good IS the Rode NT1? It is such a standard today. I really need to audition mics before I buy my vocal mic. What do you guys think, any suggestions for a versitile voice? I sometimes whisper, scream, talk into the mic when I sing.
Thanks,
Rob

Huh? Nope it's not really a standard at all. The NT2 is more of a standard than the NT1 because it sounds like such a similar mic to a Neumann U87. The NTK is probably the standard tube LDC in many studios on this board.

That's right, you do. Try as many as you can within your budget. It's the absolute best way to find what you're looking for.

What's you budget dude? If you're looking at the NT1 price range I'd suggest also auditioning the MXL range of mics (the MXLv69 is a particularly good budget tube mic) and the Studio Projects range. I personally mostly prefer the RODE stuff to these other brands, because of the 10 year guarantee, superior build quality and quality control, etc, especially since they moved into their new factory. I believe RODE manufacture their capsules on-site in Australia now, instead of China (?). Also audition a Shure Beta 58, my sometimes secret weapon, and dirt cheap pre-loved.

Anyway check ém all out, YMMV.

what is your price range? (Stay tuned for chess' review of the groove tube 1b) As far as a standard I think you would find the guys here own many different mics. The only Rode I have is the NTK. For cheaper I use, and frequently, 4033, senn 421, 3035 and baby bottle. I also auditioned a SP c1 this week and I like it alot

thanks guys

Well your right! My price range is around the Rode mics. $100-$500. Like I said, I sing alot of different ways, so versitility is the key. And what I meant by standard was that it IS a standard now! As far as home recording goes. I always hear about Rode everywhere.

I own a Rode NT1, NT2, NT3's, and NT5's and I like all of them... the NT1 and NT2 are better for vocals than the NT3 or NT5 IMO.

MXL V69 Mogami, or if you like a more Neutral mic, the V77.

Both nice tube mics, the V77 is my favorite, sounds like an expensive German mic.

As far as home recording and small/mid-sized studio use goes, I think you could do better by stocking up with Audio Technica mics.

Just a personal preference; but most of their models are good, and they also tend to be pretty versatile. And they just tend to get you consistantly pleasing results from my experience.

Nothing against Rode -- they make a few decent ones. Certainly not what I'd consider versatile, but when matched with the right source, they tend to impart their own little bit of magic from time to tim. Generally speaking.

I have an NT-2 and an NTV, the previous incarnation of the NTK.

Both are excellent mics, and do well on a variety of sources and voices.

I think the main complaint about the original NT-1 was having a harsh top-end. The NT1A may have addressed that issue, but I don't know.

$500 = 1 at 4033 + studio projects c1
there is versatility and good vocal coverage

thanks guys. I am lazy and haven't ALWAYS auditioned things before I bought them. I will look into each of these models. Just one more question. Do technical specs mean diddly if you haven't actually heard the mics yet?
Thanks,
Rob

Sometimes maybe a little bit, other times no... you really need to hear the mics.
