I hear when in protools it takes the amount of time the track is to mix it down to a file...is this true?and is there anyway to speed up the process?

How long does the process take that you currently use to do what you just said ?

yes this is true. Bouncing to a file happens in real time.
the reason this is so, is because Pro Tools is a software program that is used in many larger studios. Usually these studios have outboard gear, and usually the engineers prefer to use outboard gear (ie. effect processors, dynamic processors, large consoles, etc). And so the only way to do this is to bounce in real time.
There is an "export selected as file" command, which is offline...but this is really only useful if you prefer individual files for each track/region (ie. one long 30min. mono track)...otherwise you have to do it in real time. just set it and walk away, or listen to make sure you haven't missed anything while bouncing.
