Hello, Cakeys!

I'm getting really frustrated here with trying to use the Cakewalk Pitch Shifter. I had a thread a while back about how I was trying to use it to create an octave effect on a strummed guitar track - goin' for the poor man's 12-string :D. Anyway, I was quickly set straight by the helpful folks here and told that I needed to lower my expectations of the pitch shifter - that it really works best on single-note passages and small shift increments. Ok - expectations lowered...

But, now I'm trying to do a very small pitch shift (trying 0.2) on a single-note vocal track for a very small selection. One phrase fell a little flat at the end, and I'm trying to just tweak it up a notch. Damn tone-deaf singers!!! ... (oh yeah, it was me :o :D) Anyway, so I select the piece of the track, go to Apply Audio Effect, select the Pitch Shifter, choose "Mix in Place, Mono Result", select 0.2 shift, 0% dry, 100% wet, 0 for everything else, and go for it.

The damn thing flatlines! The signal is gone. Anyway, I have no idea what I'm doing wrong (besides my vocals, of course ;) ). Anyone have any thoughts on what could be happening? Anyone used the Pitch Shifter like this with success?

Thanks,
-Jeff

Damn, you're fast, Moskus. :)

Good suggestion - I didn't try to mix to a new track. I'll give that a shot to see if it works. I know I can always punch-in a new phrase , but I just am fiddling around and trying to see how/if I can use some of the software's features.

Thanks!

I've had it once too, but I can't remember how I solved it.

It hasn't got anything to do with the pitch shifter. I believe it's a HS2002 bug, but haven't been able to reproduce it ever since...

Did you do any non-destructive editing (fades, shorten clips) on the track? I believe it had something to do with that. One of the things I tried was emptying my PictureCache folder. I tried too many things....aw man, can't remember....sorry :)

Okay, I've done a little testing and:
Either the Delay Time or Mod Depth. must not be set to 0.

Not to steer you away from the topic, but Antares Auto Tune is designed for this kind of thing. It might give you better results than the pitch shifter.

guitar ed is right, but then again you'll have to buy the Antares  . moskus had given you perfect answer. Either the Delay Time or Mod Depth. must not be set to 0. I know it sounds silly, but that's what it takes for "free" bundled feature :D Don't expect them too much... :p

how the heck did you figure that out??

That did the trick!! Set the Mod Depth to 0.90, and it worked. I never would have figured that out! Thanks, moskus, and everyone else for your input! :) Gotta love this BBS!!

If I stumble upon some extra cash, I'll have to check out the Antares Auto Tune - thanks for the suggestion.

Boy oh boy... We all love the BBS ;) This one is sooo... cute :o :D BTW, about the Antares. Becarefull using this plugins. I've just founded Microphone Modeler tends to turn your stereo wave into exactly similiar two (L&R) wave as the result of it's process. Actualy I just got a phone call from a friend who asked about this and tried curiously in Cool Edit pro 2. It turned stereo wave into 2 mono... if anyone has this Antares Mic Modeler plugins, please try and see...

Is it just me, or do you think the Cakewalk forum is friendlier too? This forum seems to be the nicest...

No egos, only friendly people.

@guttadaj
I'm glad you managed to do that pitch sift but, just FYI, I found that Prosoniq Time Factory is the best app for time/pitch shifting - much better than the built-in Sonar shifter. Highly recommended.

Yes we are! No contest!

It's some kind of group-mentality... you know... :D
