Hello, I recently bought two "new" microphones from a friend who outgrew them. I'm a little curious as to what you guys think. I've never really mic'd anything before and am still learning about different mics and whatnot. I am a primarily a DJ who is looking to step into the production side of things. I got a seldom used Sure SM57 w/case, and a never used MXL 2001 w/shock mount ($100 for everything). I've read the MXL makes a "decent" condensor for el cheapo, and I've always wanted an SM57. Was this any kind of deal?

PS I've been using an Audio Technica ATR30 (kareoke mic) so to me this is a step up.

The 57 is a solid mic that works fine for many things (recording, tool, blunt weapon, etc.). I've read mixed things about the 2001. Try it out and see if it works for you. If not, sell it and move on to something better (MXL V67g, etc.). Overall, the deal is fine. Both mics sell for $80-100 each, new.
 
Thanx guyz! I'm planning on recording spoken word, some rap, poetry, acoustic guitar, and random sounds around the house. Any suggestions on which mic to use for what? My "arsenal" now includes the SM57, ATR30, and the MXL 2001. w00t! :p


PS What about pop filters? I thought those where soley for vocals.

99.9% of the time yes. Sometimes a kick drum mic can benefit if the rush of air needs to be tamed.

I would add that if you happen to be doing ENG/EFP work, foam pop filters (as opposed to the usually round nylon or wire mesh pop filters that mount on your mic stand and sit between you and the mic) are also an okay windscreen, but for either variety, yeah, mostly for vocals....
