Re trapping my room...

So I've been working with this set up for a few years now .....

the 2 traps in the corners in the first pic, along with the chunk type foam above and below em have been taken out to be replaced by the corner traps I'm gonna build next.

The 2nd is just the back of the room behind my desk.

Small room...16 ft wide....18 ft at the depth of that "cove" ...14 ft deep at the door.

Ceiling peaks at 10 ft 6" and wall height is 7 ft 9"

Bein as how it's so squarish o ) I figgered more trapping was in order.

Anyway...I'll post some progress pics so far and then when I get the corner traps done.

Tryin to get some trapping directly behind my mix desk.......which happens to be the corner here....

And the other trap I swiped from the front corners and mounted what's gonna be above and behind (kinda) my drums

hangin the ceiling traps (244's from GIK ) and tweakin the height.
I guess they're right...

And the boxes of Roxul rockboard 60 goodz for the corner traps. These will go from floor to ceiling in the front corners at my desk and the 2 short corners in the "cove" thing that used to be a vocal booth.

how did you arrange to hang the layered corner/cloud in the ceiling/wall junction on the front , are the panels framed in 1/4's?

looks cool, but doesn't it create some reflection?

Actually, those panels REDUCE reflections, that's the point. The corners of a room reflect sound right back to the source, those panels help soak it up.

yeah...kinda flyin by the seat of my pants here but from all I've read...square rooms equals more trapping. pretty much.

Actually, those panels REDUCE reflections, that's the point. The corners of a room reflect sound right back to the source, those panels help soak it up.

No frames....just rigid insulation covered by some sheet like fabric and hangin by yarn.

I am aware of RFZ absorbent panel purpose. My question in regards to the framing is the resoning of possible reflections due to the incident angle of placement related to the monitors.

No frames....just rigid insulation covered by some sheet like fabric and hangin by yarn

Ahh... Well yeah, I suppose a little frame probably WOULD create a small amount of reflection. If the width of the frame was 1/2", then 12' of it is 72 sq. inches of wood at the face. There's 1152 sq.in. of absorbant tho, so the 72 sq.in. is insignificant. Plus if the trap wasnt there, you'd have that same 72 sq.in. of sound hitting the wall behind it and reflecting back anyway. The frame creates kind of a sonic shadow where those 72 sq.in. doesn't hit the wall behind it (or hugely diminishes it), and actually reflects back a few milliseconds sooner. So if anything it has some minor diffusion properties!

Thanks man....the 2 different angles of the ceiling taxed my few remaining brain cells tryin to get em right. They're a bit crooked but I'm not that particular.

I wondered if I was usin everything to the best advantage but...I once heard a wise man say "you can never really overdo bass trapping."

Not sure how it sounds yet. Hoping to get the material to do the corner traps this weekend. I think I'm just gonna use some black sheet like fabric, maybe a hot glue gun and some 3/4 inch wood trim type stuff to make em.

Just jonesin now. Cables strung everywhere...ladders, tools, drums, cymbals, empty beer cans and dead hookers layin all over the room.

It'll probably take me a day just to clean up, sort it out and lay it all back out again. (except the hookers )

But...it'll be worth it.

Corner traps are done!
12 hours on Saturday between cuttin the insulation and fixin my sprinkler system then another 9 hours Sunday cuttin fabric, doin the trim and the clean up afterward.

The first pic, you can just make out the X's that will make the triangles. They're 17" down each side with 24" across the front.
All said and done it took 178 triangles to do all 4 traps.

I found it a better and easier cut if you cut along the line with a utility blade first...then saw thru with a fine toothed hand saw.
