Re-recording Tracks

My ideas for a specific song are always changing, so I re-record numerous times on a single track, usually vocals and/or guitar. How many times can you record over a single track before you start to compromise the sound quality? I keep my heads and rubber cleaned and demagnetized.

When I was four tracking (the good old days) I would limit myself to no more than four or five retakes, and if it was something that I wouldn't lose anything with, I'd just pop in another tape. I really don't know at what point you would notice a big difference in sound, I wouldn't want to test it though...
